Greetings from GEOS Montreal!! Greetings from GEOS Montreal. The leaves have now started to turn, and Mount Royal, the mountain in the middle of the city, is on fire with color. The school has stayed really busy this year into the autumn and our full calendar of classes, activities, and our new coffee hour have kept the students and the staff completely and happily busy.
We're really excited about the continued growth of our school. We have more students, more staff, more activities and programs than ever before. Some of these we've talked about in previous newsletters, some of which you will here about here, and some of which you will hear about soon.

In the news, Uri Carnat, our school manager, is the proud father of a baby boy named Benjamin Charles! Benjamin is Uri’s second child, but first boy. We are all very excited for this wonderful parent!
GEOS Montreal is also proud to introduce “Coffee Talk”. Every Tuesday starting in October, the “Coffee Talk” meeting allows all students to get together with one of the GEOS Staff Members and chat over a warm cup of coffee and cookies. Topics can be related to Montreal, the school , or even academic material. These weekly meetings facilitate communication between the students and the school’s staff, as well as enabling students to ask questions and get to know one another.

Hello,
My name is Tina. I am 24 years old and I am from Germany.
I stayed in Montreal for four weeks in a host family. I studied English. GEOS choose a very nice host family for me. So I could practice my English which I have learned at school everyday.
The GEOS team was great and warm. Whenever I have problems, I can ask them and they will help me. I feel I am welcomed. The teachers used different kinds of teaching methods, like listening, conversation, presentation, work in teams, movies and others. Therefore, the learning result is very good.
GEOS had also a big offer on activities after school everyday in the week and especially on Friday. I had the chance to get to know Montréal with a big group of students. I was also on a daytrip to Ottawa. It was a well organized trip. I got to know the capital city of Canada. It was a very good day.
I had a great time in Montréal. I had the chance to meet people from different countries and different cultures. I made a lot of new friends.
I will never forget this time. |

You’ll be impressed by the Halloween atmosphere as you enter the Main Exhibition Greenhouse.
Hundreds of decorated pumpkins will be all decked out for the Great Pumpkin Ball. Come admire the wacky, creative efforts of their talented designers in this one-of-a-kind exhibition in Montréal.
Why not contribute to the spooky surroundings yourself, by entering a decorated pumpkin in our annual contest, along with many other students, families and adults? There are lots of prizes to be won.

The most rewarding part of our work here at the school is hearing from current and former students who tell us about the life-changing experience that they've had in Montreal, and we are always gratified and assured when students return, or when they send their family or friends to study with us. That being said, we always love to hear from you, so send us a note.

A Day in the Life of Adriana Sandoval
7:00: I wake up and take my bath. I feel so tired because last night I went to Karaoke with my friends. It was so much fun! I never thought I could sing in Japanese! Oh! I have to hurry up because I have to make it to my bus stop by 8:20! I still have enough time to make my lunch: Paté Chinois – a typical Canadian meal... so delicious! Oh, and apple pie that I made on Sunday with the apples that I got from apple picking with my homestay family!
I catch the bus and arrive at GEOS. It’s so exciting! Everyday I meet new people, I discover new things, and new cultures… this morning I learned how to say “I’m lost” in French: “Je suis perdue”! So funny! I know it’s going to be useful since my friends and I are going shopping this afternoon!
Lunch time! We all meet in the students’ lounge and we all have lunch together. Of course, we talk about last night’s Karaoke! We are already planning our next activity! It’s amazing to share so many memories with people from all around the world! We are all in the same position: in a foreign country and far away from our homes, and learning French or English (French in my case).
My afternoon class is so much fun! Today we all have an oral presentation about our family and our country. I am so happy because I have the opportunity to tell my classmates about where I live, my family, and my life in Colombia.
Class is over and it’s shopping time! We obviously get lost, but, believe me, it’s the best way to find out about the city and have fun with your friends! Besides, it’s better to get lost with your friends than alone!! No, seriously, you can find a metro station at nearly every block so you’re not really lost! We get hungry and go to Tim Horton’s. I order a French Vanilla coffee with my meal (it’s my favorite!) and we admire all our shopping! We bought lots of things and got good prices because we can get student discounts!
I am tired, so tired! I go back to my house and start talking about my day with my host family (in French, by the way!) then, I go to my room and start practicing my music because tomorrow I will have a jam session with my Italian friend. Wow! There is so much to do in so little time! I get in bed and, before I fall asleep, I think about how much I’m looking forward to my next day in Montreal!

American Streamlined Design: The World of Tomorrow http://www.uga.edu/gamuseum/exhibitions/streamlined.html
The works in the exhibition are selected from the Eric Brill collection, which comprises over 800 examples of American industrial design assembled by this one collector over the last three decades and donated to the Liliane and David M. Stewart Program for Modern Design, organizers of the exhibition under the direction of David A. Hanks.
“This exhibition explores one of the most fascinating periods of American design history,” says Liliane M. Stewart, “and makes Eric Brill’s extraordinary gift available to a wide international audience.”
Continuing her most generous support of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Mrs. Stewart has donated the Brill collection to the Museum to be integrated with the Liliane and David M. Stewart collection of twentieth-century international design. |

Teacher of the month:
Yeemon Aung Originally from Burma, Yeemon lived most of her life in Sydney, Australia. Although she studied in Economics, she soon discovered that her true passion is teaching the English language. Yeemon taught English as a second language in Tailand for some time before moving to Canada where she still lives.
Expressive, energetic, and extremely friendly, she believes students learn best when they learn from each other. “I have taken some French lessons in Montreal, so I know what it’s like to feel completely lost in a language!” That is the reason why Yeemon can truly relate to her students. “I like that my students feel comfortable… I want them to know that they are in a friendly environment where their teacher and their classmates can help!” So what will the future hold for this blooming young teacher? “I want to keep exploring the world -- new cultures and places, but mostly, I want to continue on my path to self-discovery.” |

October is here and, with the beautiful and vibrant colors of the Canadian autumn, we are all eager for the exciting GEOS Montreal activities scheduled for this month!
First up: Karaoke! GEOS Montreal students will have the chance to demonstrate their talent at this month’s “Karaoke Show-Down”.
Then, on Saturday October 6th, students will make a one day stop to stunning Quebec City, the province’s capital.
Also on schedule is a tour of CBC studios. The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation is Canada's national public broadcaster and one of its largest cultural institutions. GEOS Montreal students will be able to visit the Montreal studios and, who knows, perhaps meet a Canadian celebrity!
On following weekend, students will spend two days in exciting Toronto, where they will visit breathtaking Niagara Falls.
What would be an autumn in Montreal like without visiting the Mount-Royal in October? With its trees changing into a thousand different shades of reds and oranges, the Mount-Royal is splendid in October! So our students must take a hike up and tour our beautiful mountain!
Then, to get ready for the great Canadian winter, Indoor Ice Skating is on schedule for a later date in October.
This month students will also get to show their moves at the GEOS Montreal Bowling Tournament scheduled on October 25th.
Finally, October in North-America means one word: Halloween! So from Monday October 29th to Wednesday October 31st there will be activities on the theme of Halloween everyday. From pumpkin carving to a dress-up Halloween party, the horribly pleasant season will be a blast!. |
