Warm Winter Greetings from GEOS Montreal! The snow has arrived very early this year, a surprise to everybody, with many of our students from around the world seeing their first snowstorms. Like all challenges in life, the weather has all of us trudging a little harder to get to school in the morning, and has made for many great conversations. Adversity builds character . Dealing with 40 cm. of snow is reminiscent of the challenges our students face every day in working to perfect their English and their French. |

I just wanted to pass along again how much I enjoyed the educational experience last week at the GEOS Montreal Academy.
The school truly lives up to its motto of a professional appearance with a fun attitude. I'm already looking at next year's December calendar to plan for next year’s trip.
In the Meantime I plan to continue studying my French. Please pass along a big hello to everyone for me, and I hope you and your family have a wonderful holiday season this year.
Take care, Will |

TEACHER OF THE MONTH |
|
With many new students always arriving, we have nonetheless recently had to bid a few students who had spend six months at the school farewell. The emotional difficulty for the students leaving and for the staff at the school who have worked with them so closely has reinforced to all of us the important work that we do. The school creates a home away from home for all of our students and staff, making goodbyes very painful. This is certainly the theme of the holiday period, and so on behalf of everyone at the school, I'd like to wish you a warm, safe, and happy Holiday Season. |

Every morning my alarm clock wakes me up at 07.30. I tidy my bed and take my bath. I genrally start the day with a very good breakfast because it keeps me strong during the day. While I am having my lunch I usually have a quick chat with my flat-mate about anything and of course my day is shaped better with a voice saying: ‘bonjour Onur’.
The owner of this voice belongs to my host family’s 8 year old daughter. She is such a smart girl that every day she finds something to surprise me. For example, last night I was caught by a dinner gangster who |

Michael Velan!!
Born and raised in Montreal, Quebec, Michael (Mike) Velan holds a BA in Eastern Philosophy from McGill University. After travelling to India for some time, Mike considered two career paths: teaching or business. He finally got a Teaching Certificate in Vancouver, BC, and has been teaching ever since.
Eccentric and outgoing, Mike believes it’s always better to keep it light in the classroom: “the best way for any student to learn quickly is to keep an open mind and to have a willingness to learn as much as possible”.
That is why Mike likes to keep a fun atmosphere in the classroom. And what is in the works for this young, dynamic teacher?
“I would love to go back to India on a personal pilgrimage…
Yes, I would love that!” |

SCHOOL ACTIVITIES
|

Ho Ho Ho! It’s December! With the holidays coming up, GEOS Montreal has a ton of fun activities planned for this month starting right on December 1st with a trip to the Sugar Shack! A true symbol of Quebec, the Sugar Shack is where Maple Syrup is made. Visitors get to learn how they make this tasty Canadian syrup, but also get to visit farm animals like horses, emus, goats, and wild turkeys. After the tour, everyone gathers to eat a traditional French Canadian meal and dance to traditional Canadian music. A fun trip for young and old, the Sugar Shack experience is a must!
Then, on December 8th, GEOS students will go Laser Questing. Introduced as a new activity in September 2007, Laser Quest has been a hit with students! That is why we are planning this activity again in December.
Following the thrills of Laser Quest, GEOS Montreal students will get to visit Ottawa on Saturday December 8th. Then, on the following Monday night of December 10th, students will attend the GEOS Montreal Annual Holiday Dinner. The Holiday Dinner is a great chance for students, staff members, and teachers to get together over a delicious meal! This year the dinner will take place at a restaurant on beautiful Prince Arthur Street.
On December 13th, students will leave the island of Montreal to visit the “Vieux-Longueuil Christmas Market”. Located on the South Shore of Montreal, the “Vieux-Longueuil Christmas Market” is an event like no other, where its visitors are transported back in time to a beautiful 18th century Canadian Christmas village! Carollers, crafts vendors, and yummy homemade sweets stands are at the rendezvous for GEOS Montreal students!
Finally, on the week before Christmas GEOS Montreal students will be invited to participate in a series of fun holiday events such as the Secret Santa Game and a GEOS Montreal Christmas party! |

SPOTLIGHT PROGRAM |

Last month, GEOS Montreal students who are studying in French attended the filming of the French Canadian television show “Une Heure sur Terre”, a talk show discussing international and national topics. The television show was filmed in the CBC Studios.
Also last month, our CFP1 (The first level of our French program), served us all breakfast at the “Bon Matin”. Students prepared a lovely breakfast for teachers, staff members, and students from other classes, turning their classroom into a French Bistro!
Last but certainly not least, we are proud to introduce the newest member of the GEOS Montreal Staff: Daniel Moscovitch.
Daniel will take the responsibility of Operations Manager and we are excited to have him as part of our team. Daniel has worked for many years in music education. He has taught students of all levels and ages, on many different instruments, in English and in French. He operated a music school where he supervised a staff of 18 teachers and a base of over 200 students. Daniel understands the challenges that accompany an individual in their quest to improve their skills and is here to help make your experience as a GEOS student as enjoyable as possible. |

takes people to the dinner table by her gun and waits for you to finish your meal with her gun on you!.
After putting on lots of warm clothes I take my way to the school. I reach to the school around 9.20. Uri sits on his table at the corner and if he is not very busy to move up his head from his laptop I give first morning greetings to him and then of course to Suzi and Caterina. After the morning class here we are in the lunch break. I’ll tell you what; I never understand how the time passes by in the lunch breaks. It’s because in |
