Warm Valentine’s Greetings from GEOS Montreal!!

The end of the winter starts with Valentines' Day, when all of the love starts to melt the snow.  In fact, it has been a relatively warm winter so far, with many days above freezing.

The school population continues to grow, and we are especially pleased out our excellent nationality mix, with no group of students representing more than 20% of the whole.

I recently had a chance to travel to Mexico on a business trip, meeting other GEOS Managers from around the world and also many of the agencies who send students.  It is great to travel to the home countries of our students, to better appreciate where they come from and the experiences they bring to the school.  As well, it is very helpful to be reminded what it is like to travel to a new country where people speak a different language, eat different food, and have different customs.

Studying at GEOS Montreal will be recorded in my memories because I met both, great friends from many countries and professional people from GEOS. Besides, the environment was very good and made everybody feel comfortable and relaxed.

It was two wonderful months of unforgettable experiences with unforgettable people, which made my trip worth it, all this together with my English improvement in lively classes. I’m sure that in the future I will come back to Montreal and to GEOS, but then to learn French.

That’s why I want to thank GEOS for everything you have done for me and tell you… See you soon!... I’ll be back.

TEACHER OF THE

 MONTH

For this reason all of the staff, starting with me, take it be one of our most important jobs to make students feel comfortable in their new environment.  The school wants our students to receive an excellent language education, but it is also our primary mission to introduce new cultures, and to offer great life adventures.   We want all of our students to leave Montreal having had the time of their lives.

Again, we love to hear from all of our students, current and former, about their experiences in Montreal and at the school.  Don't be shy.

Start your day with some waffles with maple syrup, after a nice and warm bath in Montreal. Get your bus to the metro and then the metro to downtown where you will get off at guy Concordia metro station, walk 2 blocks and there you are in the globe 1350 where in the 8th floor is the language academy GEOS Montréal.

That is the beginning of my day in Montreal.

In the school I say hi to Suzy and the new guy, have a nice chat with Uri and Gonzalo and voila

Ian Orti

Ian has been teaching English for over 5 years.  He studied English Literature in University and he also writes for a literary magazine in his spare time.

His favourite verb tense is the present perfect, he is not afraid of future perfect continuous tenses, and he especially proud of students who can properly use the third conditional.  "When I was a child my mother would always correct my pronunciation and she would get especially angry if I used the word 'ain't' or 'gonna'."

SPOTLIGHT PROGRAM

February is flying by and winter will soon be on the way out. GEOS students have really taken advantage of the snowy weather. No hibernating bears in Montreal. For many, it is the first time seeing snow, and it’s always amazing to see the look on student’s faces when they get involved in outdoor activities. Of course we don’t always head outside, but we always have a blast! Student turn-out has been good, and I’ve never seen so many digital cameras in one place. No matter how cold it gets; no matter how windy it is; no matter how deep the snow; you will find a GEOS student taking pictures! And after each activity, without fail, the computers are full and the e-mails are flowing; sharing with relatives and friends back home, with words, photos and even video; the events of the day.

At the start of the month, we embarked on a special Quebec city tour. Based on the feedback, it was a great way to spend a weekend. The history, the culture, the food, the people; wow! Thursday afternoons were action-packed from start to end. We gathered together at 3:45pm and set off on our journey. Kicking of February activities was a unique indoor experience, at one of Montreal’s most reputable pool and bowling halls. We started with a pool tourney and the competition was fierce! Even students, who had never played before, started sinking shots left right and center. There was more than one teacher at the tables that night. Students taught each other how to play, and everyone had fun. Then we moved on to the bowling alley, which is not your average bowling spot. The lights were dim, the neon and black lights were on, and the music was pumping. The Koreans were hands-down the master bowlers. The scores were really high! But scores aside, a good time was had by all.

The following week, the weather was perfect and we were itching to get outside. With crazy carpets in hand, up to Mt. Royal we went. Sledding was our mission. There were several rows of sledding lanes, and the snow was really packed down. Needless to say, there was some lightning speed sledding, and a few wild wipeouts to boot! Darkness set in, and the lights came on. Nothing would stop the mission. Even when the cold set in, and several of us were not properly dressed, the laughter and smiles continued on.

Tomorrow we return to indoor outing, with a visit to the Montreal Planetarium. The exhibits are supposed to be fantastic, and it will be a good opportunity for students to practice their English and French. We finish off February with an outdoor Canadian pastime; cross-country skiing. Returning to the mountain, we will strap on skis and make our way to the top of Mt. Royal, where the view of the city is incredible. It is a blessing to have access to pristine nature, while being so close to the city center. Winter is an integral part of the Montreal experience, and we haven’t missed a beat here at Montreal GEOS!

Do an Internship in GEOS Montreal as Marketing Assistant.

go to French class where I find a teacher with plenty of new ways to teach me this wonderful language.

After there is the talk with your friends where you always slip a Spanish or Portuguese word and there is always Suzy, Uri or Gonzalo to remember us what are we paying for. Then I Go back home to eat a nicely cooked meal from my host mother and take a shower.

Finally there is the night life in Montreal which is the best ever, where you can have fun forever in the winter, play pool, dance check out the nice Québécois people from around here.

So that is one of my many days in Montréal.
