October is a very artistic and colourful month. First of all, as the sun goes down earlier, the leaves on the trees change colors, which leave us with breathtaking landscapes. It’s a wonderful time to walk on Mont-Royal or even to spend a day outside of Montreal, in the Laurentians region or in the Cantons-de-l’Est.

Our former activity coordinator, Marikym, which many students love so much, has returned to Montreal and to GEOS from her trip to Brazil. She will be with us for only one month, until mid October before she ventures out on her new adventure!
Our admin assistant Rustem who has been working with us for one year had to leave GEOS Montreal in order spend some time in New York with his family. We will miss him a lot and we thank him for his hard work and his daily good mood. He will be replaced by a new assistant named Yuri. She will be introduced in our next Newsletter.
Please find below an introduction of one of our French teachers: Marie Pierre Courtland.

Even if Summer vacations are over for students and many Montrealers, the city still has many events and activities to offer. The students have taken advantage of the good weather and the warm temperatures.
First, they had a fun time at Happy Hour at the beginning of the month. Which was a great way to meet the other students and to practice French and English!
The following Friday, they went to taste Poutine at Frites Alors, a tradition in Quebec that consists of French fries, cheese curds and gravy sauce. It was a success!
They all enjoyed it! Because they were in Quartier Latin, they enjoyed the activities and shows on St-Denis street, part of the new OUMF Festival.
Montreal is a very multicultural and vibrant city. We surely have to thank the Irish community for the small pieces of Irish culture that we can discover across the city. Therefore, the students went to Hurley’s Irish pub to enjoy some Murphy’s and Guinness and to listen to some Traditional Irish music during a “Trad Session”. They all had a very good “craic” as Irish people would say!
Every year, in September, the international exhibition World Press Photo stopps by Montreal. Once again, the students were amazed by the quality of the pictures and touched by the emotion that it provided them. Then, they went to have the famous “Beaver Tail”, a Canadian pastry, in Old Montreal.
Fall is the best season to visit Jean-Talon Market, because it’s the harvest season and therefore, the students could taste different vegetables, fruits and other Québécois products, like Sugar Pie!
Luckily we received the Arcade Fire at Quartier des Spectacles for the Pop Montreal. This Montreal born group gave a free show that numerous students were able to enjoy.
Like every year, the Magic lanterns at the Botanical Garden are an event not to be missed. And so didn’t the students. This open air exhibition celebrates the Chinese Tradition with more than 700 lanterns shining everywhere throughout the Chinese Garden.
Finally, during the final week of September, some students went to Mont Royal to admire the wonderful views that fall and the colors of the changing leaves offer us, in this cool, but great season.

What is happening in October in Montreal?
October is also artistic because of the numerous festivals Montreal welcomes. The Off Festival de Jazz is taking place at many locations around the city from October 7th to 15th. Over the years, the festival has become a meeting place for original projects and unexpected collaborations: a truly living form of jazz.
Also in October is the 40th edition of Festival du Nouveau Cinema. This year, the festival offers more than 290 independent films from 51 different countries over 12 days. Not only does it offer high-quality works, it’s Canada’s oldest international film festival. Don’t miss that festival from October 12th to 23rd in many theatres around the city.
Finally be sure to stop by Marche Bonsecours from October 20th to 23rd, as the Braderie de mode Quebecoise is going to take place offering you clothing by Quebecois designers at reduced prices.
