Welcome to our December newsletter. This month was much appreciated by everyone: the snow, the cold days, the christmas trees and decoration made this month one to remember. Everyone had a good holiday season with good food, warm drinks, Christmas songs, and some gifts. Now, that Chritmas is over and that the new year is upon us, it is time to enjoy winter activites. Put on your skates, your skies or snowshoeing and enjoy the snow that montreal offers to all its inhabitants. GEOS Montreal wishes to each of you a Happy New Year 2011. Hopefully this year will bring you hapiness, health and success and... good English and French...to our students!

Please find below one of our French teachers. Her name is Valentina and she introduces herself:

December in GEOS Montreal was very busy month. On Thursday December 2nd, Spanish speakers and non-spanish speakers enjoyed a fun and festive evening at Limon, Mexican delights. We learned a lot of spanish sentences and words. This shows that we can learn more than English and French at GEOS Montreal...
The day after, the students enjoyed an exciting Bowling Night at Quilles G plus. As it was a night organised by University of Quebec in Montreal and there was plenty of students from different school with whom to share laughs, drinks, and of course, exiting bowling games. It’s not always easy to put at least one pin down.
Christmas celebrations never stop in Montreal. From December 3rd to the 23rd, the Salon des Metiers d’Art du Quebec offered the opportunity to enjoy and buy nice pieces of art made by artisans from all over Quebec and even world wide. An interesting way to find unique gifts and souvenirs.

December 10th is a date students will remember for a long time because of our Christmas Party. Celebrated at Le Magnan, a well-know restaurant in Montreal, the students enjoyed a traditionnal Quebecois Holiday dinner including tourtiere (meat pis), turkey, porc leg ragout, mashed potatoes and cranneberry sauce, and of course the famous Christmas Log.

To truly enjoy Winter in Montreal, we need to keep busy and try all the Winter sports. Therefore, we went ice skating on Bassin Bonsecours in Old Port of Montreal. As it was the first time ice skating for most of the students, many of them fell but everyone kept laughing. Finally, the 21 students that were there are now ice skating champions and will remember that night all their life!

What is happening in January in Montreal?
In January, don’t miss the Happening Gourmand, from January 10th to 31st, where 8 fine cuisine restaurants will offer their menu for a fraction of the regular price. It’s a great way to taste some of the finest meals that Montreal has to offer. Also, starting on January 13th, every Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays of January, join hundreds of people on the Quays of Old Port of Montreal for Igloofest, the most anticipated series of outdoor rave events of the winter season. Finally, La Fete des Neiges de Montreal offers family and adults tons of Winter activities to enjoy every weekends from January 22nd, in Parc Jean-Drapeau.
Also, you can read below a few words from an Italian student who gives us his feelings about winter in Montreal:
"When I decided to move to Montreal for the winter, people told me: "Man, you're going to freeze there! It's not the same weather of Rome!", but i always answered them that some grade less couldn't be so bad...Well, now that i'm here in Montreal, i really understand what the term "cold" means: Snow, ice, frozen ears, feet and hands (not to mention the nose!), a strong necessity of hot chocolate! Here in GEOS, teachers told us that "the only way to survive the canadian winter, is to enjoy it!", and i've no doubt that, with all the amazing activities that GEOS organizes (thanks Marykim for that! :) ), we found the best way to live the cold season! Ice skating, bowling, ski trip, sledding on Mont Royal, cinemas and even walking in the snowy streets downtown to discover (in great company, of course!) peculiarities of winter in Montreal, are the right things to do...and we do them!! During winter, being at home is the shortcut to feel depressed! It's so much better to go outside with my GEOS friends from all over the world and enjoy a winter so different from my home city's one!"
