Welcome to our January newsletter. This month offered us some very cold (-25C) days in which we had to wear long underwears, ski pant, wollen sweathers, gloves, a scarf and a hat so that only the eyes would be seen by the others. The temperature couldn't stay stable, we had some ups and downs with some snowfalls. People could enjoy winter activities as there was enough snow to make a snow man, to have a snow battle, to snowshoe, to ski downhill or to cross country ski. Winter is not finished, so let's face it, and play with it.

"My name is Yeemon and I hail from the land down under. I have been working at GEOS for four years now and it has allowed me to meet wonderful people from so many different cultural backgrounds and for that, I am blessed. If I haven’t met you yet, please come and say hello! On the weekends when I am not teaching, my other passion in life is to experience and enjoy the Canadian wilderness. No matter what the season is, you’ll find me in the mountains. I usually hike, camp, snowshoe or climb on rock/ice." Yeemon Aung English Teacher
For those who know him, Ian Orti will leave at the beginning of February to Ecuador where he will probably stay a couple of months and keep on writing books.
We also have a new teacher for our English level one. Her name is Naivi Cuesta.

"Hello to everyone.!!!! How should I start? Let's do it first talking about the city. Montreal as you know is a perfect bilingual city where you can see a huge diversity of cultures, that make it more interesting. Because as long as you stay here you are going to have a better personal perspective, hearing all the time differents languages in the streets , events, festivals, concerts, so many activities to do here in the four seassons of the year. I can't be specific telling you which one is the best, because no one is boring. Probably you will hear that winter is not the best time to come. They're wrong, it is one of the most exciting to experience and practice Sports that probably you can not do in your hometown or live a real winter as you can do it here. The best thing about Montreal is how safe is the city, you can walk confidently all the time and how well located are the metro and the bus. Montreal is the city where you will always find something different to do or a new place to go. I've been here since august 2010 studying at Geos an English and a French program. To start I can tell you that Geos is a Languages Academy well prepared to receive students from around the World with a good staff, an excellent group of teachers and obviously the atmosphere that the students create is espectacular. During your stay you have the opportunity to share part of you with a lot of kind people and find how interesting is know about different cultures. I'm sure that I'm not the Only who saids that one of the best experiences that I've ever had is being here and Montreal, and choosing Geos like a school. My english has being improved it, and I'm expecting the same French, until now is going perfect. I met people extremely awesome here, that hardly I will forget them. But I can assure you that If I come back I will choose Geos, undoubtedly. So, I just want to thank Geos (teachers, staff, and students) for be part of this memorable experience. Luly Mena Anaya, Mexico. 32 weeks. English and French full- programs.

January in Quebec is THE Winter month. Usually, it is the coldest month of the year, and 2011 is not an exception. But the cold weather didn’t stop GEOS Montreal’s students from visiting and enjoying the wonderful activities the city has to offer.

First off, students started 2011 Activity Calendar sliding down Mount Royal on Crazy Carpets, those strange plastic carpets with handles. Tired, but very excited, around 25 students woke up early the next morning, ready to go sliding down a bigger mountain, Mont Saint-Bruno, but this time on skis and snowboards.

For many, it was their first time trying this fabulous sport, and for most of them, it’s surely not their last time. One thing is for sure, they all had a wonderful day. No trip to Montreal is complete without a good Hab’s Game Night! Habs (Les Canadiens) being Montreal’s much loved Hockey team, there’s no better place to watch the game and get the vibe of it than La Cage aux Sports. That’s where the students spent the night January 12th. Even if the beloved team lost, they all had a fantastic night. The next Friday, as it was cold and windy, students enjoyed an action movie at Dollar Cinema. A very good and fun way to practice English!
Then the students completed their northern experience by going on a snowshoe hike on Mount Royal.

The next Saturday, around 15 students met at La Fete des Neiges de Montreal at Jean-Drapeau Park. There, they enjoyed all sorts of Winter activities like tube-sliding, skating and zip-line. Last week of January, students did what they had to do, which is To Taste Montreal’s Smoked Meat, and not anywhere, at famous Schwartz. Finally, GEOS students hit the outdoor rinks for some skating on ice at Lafontaine Park.

Described as the most influential fashion event in Canada, MFW regroups some of the most famous designers in the fashion world who will present their collections in a deluge of fashion shows.
Another not-to-be-missed event in February is Montreal High Lights Festival happening from February 17th to 27th. Food, drinks, lights, music, dance, plays, exhibitions, buskers, this festival offers everything you could even imagine. Plus, it closes with the famous Montreal All Nighter (Nuit Blanche), where you can find more than 175 activities everywhere in Montreal, wether you are in Old Montreal, Quartier des Spectacles, Plateau Mont-Royal, even in the underground city, as the metro stays open all night.
