Monday, November 30th, 2009 - Newsletter “Montreal - The GEOS Insider”

Welcome to our November newsletter. This was actually a really nice month compared to what it should have been. We had nice warm days with almost no rain or no snow. For example, it was still possible to bike to school. However, the end of November was marked with a bit of snow announcing the cold winter ahead!

Please keep in touch and join our Facebook group! Feel free to upload pictures and share your experience with your friends. You can also take a look at our videos (please visit www.youtube.com ) and have a look at the testimonials on our website (www.geosmontreal.com).

School Activities

Our students enjoyed our outdoor activities like the smoked meat sandwich tour, the ice skating trip, and the “Juliette & Chocolat" tour. The ice skating was a big success with our international students. We always have a group of approximately 20 people for this activity. For many of them, this was their first time skating and they definitely enjoyed it with their friends who were there to help them.  We also went to an Indian restaurant, where we enjoyed traditional dishes. It was really delicious!!! You can check our activities calendar by cliking this link: http://www.geosmontreal.com/activities.

In terms of activities in Montreal, our students had the opportunity to see the Santa Claus parade on November 21st. The "Salon du livre” occurred in Montreal where a famous French writer, Bernard Werber, was there to present his last novel. The 4th edition of the “M pour Montreal” music festival happened between the 19th and 21st of November.  Finally, the “Brazil film fest” showcased Brazilian movies from November 27th to December 3rd at the Cimena du Parc on Parc avenue.

Teacher of the Month

"Hello! My name is Peter Michaud, and I’m a new English teacher at Geos. I come from the United States, near Boston. Boston is a nice city, but I like Montreal better. I’ve lived in Montreal for more than 4 years.

I love to teach English, and I love to study French. I think comic books are a fun way to practice reading both languages. In French, comic books are called bandes dessinées, or BD for short. My favorite comic book is Iron Man, and my favorite bande dessinée is Astérix le Gaulois.

Last year, I lived in France. It was a wonderful experience! I studied French full-time, and traveled around both the country and Europe. I climbed to the top of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, saw beautiful art in Italy, and went skiing in Switzerland. I also enjoyed going to my favorite café in Montpellier, where I lived.

I’d like to thank everyone at Geos for being so nice to me, especially my students. It has been a lot of fun to be your teacher. I am looking forward to meeting and working with everyone in the future.  Merci beaucoup, et à bientôt!"

We are very proud of our Nationality mix for this month. Currently we have 21 Nationalities represented in the school among our 123 students.

You can take a look where our students are coming from:
Canada: 21%
Colombia: 11%
Brazil: 10%
Japan: 9%
Germany: 8%
Mexico and Korea: 7 % each
Saudi Arabia, France and USA: 5 % each
Turkey: 4%
Others:8 %

"When I arrived at GEOS Montreal four weeks ago, I just wanted to improve my English and add a highlight to my CV. But I found so much more than that: First of all, I have won dear friends at school. While we enjoy Montreal together and get to know our different cultures, we practice our English skills without even noticing. Also, the highly interactive classes help me build more confidence – in both my English and myself. I particularly love the role plays and discussions on controversial topics that not only increase my fluency but teach me lots about myself. This is due to the excellent young teachers, who impart even sophisticated grammar or vocabulary with esprit and humour. They make me look forward to every single school day. Thank you, GEOS!"
