Sunday 31th, October 2010 - Newsletter “Montreal - The GEOS Insider”

Welcome to our October newsletter. This month hdd up and down days in term of weather. Sometimes sunny and warm and some days, cold and rainy. It was hard to know if we were in spring or in fall. In school, the atmosphere was great: students are not discouraged by the coming winter and still showed up with smiles.

If you would like to stay in touch with GEOS Montreal, please join our Facebook group! Feel free to also upload pictures and share your experience with your friends and even former students. You can also take a look at our videos (please visit http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=GEOS+MOntreal&search_type=&a... ) and have a look at the testimonials on our website (http://www.geosmontreal.com/testimonials).

In October, we welcomed a few new teachers like Judith (a French teacher who comes from Montreal), Violene and Katherine who introduces herself below.

“Hello to all!

My name is Katherine Nemessanyi and I was born in Montreal, Canada. However, my family origins are actually Hungarian. I have been teaching at GEOS for a short period, however, it has been a lovely experience. The students are motivated, and the atmosphere is great!

Regarding my academic history, I graduated from McGill University in European History and German Studies, and I have a CELTA Certificate (English Language Teaching to Adults) from the University of Cambridge.

I am passionate about teaching, traveling, as well as learning languages. I speak 5 languages fluently, and I am currently learning my sixth. I have also studied abroad in Spain, and in Italy.

I have been teaching Business English to various companies around Montreal, as well as teaching English at International Language Schools. It is truly a wonderful experience to be teaching English to students from all around the world."

Kind regards,
Katherine Nemessanyi
English Teacher

GEOS Montreal has very good news to share with you. Uri Carnat welcomed a new member to his family. His son was born last week and we cannot wait him in the near future.

We also would like to thank Marikym for all the work that she does regarding activities for our students. In fact, she organized a well prepared Halloween party that all our students extremely enjoyed.

"Salut, je m'appelle Ole et je viens de d'Allemagne. During my seven months of travel I stopped in Montreal to improve my French which at that point did not exist. I had a great time at GEOS and it actually helped me a lot. Now I feel prepared to the upcoming months in which I will experience more of the beautiful Montreal life. I cannot and do not want to imagine where my start would have looked like without a month of French classes. The teachers are great and after a while I also started to enjoy the activities offered by the school. Thanks a lot for that. Montreal is beautiful and I can only recommend you to start your stay at GEOS. J'ai passe un mois très interessant. Merci beaucoup!!"

October was quite a busy month for students at GEOS Montreal, as  they had plenty of activities to be part of.

They started the month with going to the famous World Press Photo Exhibition. This exhibition gathers the 2010 winners of the yearly photojournalism contest organized by World Press Photo organisation. Montreal is lucky to be one of the 100 cities in the world that welcomes it every year. The students had the chance to have a look at hundreds of pictures taken world wide and from different events that occurred throught out 2010.

Montreal is a very multicultral and vibrant city. We surely have to thank the Irish community for the small pieces of irish culture that we can discover accross the city. Therefore, the students went to Hurley’s Irish pub to enjoy some Murphys and Guinness and to listen to some Traditional Irish music during a “Trad Session”. They all had a very good “craic” as Irish people would say!

Fall is a very nice season here in Quebec to enjoy the nature. Many students participated in a trip to Mont Tremblant with Iko excursions to appreciate ‘ the colors’ refering to the color changing of the leaves.

Plus, some students went, as a group, to Montreal Botanic Garden to see the Magic Lanterns. This open air exhibition celebrates the Chinese Tradition with more than 700 lanterns shining everywhere throughtout the Chinese Garden.

Another fun way to appreciate the Fall season is to enjoy a movie with some friends. Nearly 20 students confronted the wind and the rain to have a very pleasant night at DollarCinema, where they enjoyed a movie for only $2.00. What a good way to spend an evening!
Fun never stops at GEOS Montreal! More than 25 students gathered to El Zaziummm, a very funky beach restaurant, where the heat is on and the fun is guaranted. With quesedillas and Mariachis, some students felt just like at home.

Finally, the end of October came and with it came GEOS’s Halloween Party. As many students were celebrating this event for the first time, all of them were deguised.

All day, pictures were taken, music was playing and everyone was laughing. After class, the students gathered to share a Potluck, food brought by each student, and to participate in some compétitions such as the costume competition and the mummy wrap contest where they could win some fantastic prices! The afternoon ended with some dancing, music and a lot of sweets! The day wasn’t over as some energyfull students met at La Shop nightclub where the party continued at night!
