Welcome to our September newsletter. We had a couple of nice sunny and warm days that give people the time to prepare themselves slowly to the coming winter. Fall is, in Quebec, a wonderful season because of the weather and of the colors. In fact, it is the perfect time to go hiking through the forest as all the leaves change their color!

GEOS Montreal has several events which have occurred this month. Our beloved teacher Ecaterina took a leave of abscence because she is pregnant. We wish her to have a nice pregnancy and we are looking forward to seeing the future baby. We also welcomed a few new teachers recently and one of them, Janeen Yusuf who teaches English, introduces herself bellow:

“Hello, My name is Janeen Yusuf and I have been teaching at GEOS for the last two months. I was born in Canada but I have an international heritage. My parents and grandparents are from East Africa (Kenya and Tanzania), and my ancestry stems from India. Before starting at GEOS I studied International Development and Globalization at the University of Ottawa, and a year later completed a Diploma in Print Journalism. Recently, I spent a year in Tanzania getting to know my father’s homeland, working for a non-profit organization and teaching English. My experience at GEOS allows me to interact with wonderful people from across the world. Together we are learning from each other.”

We also have a new intern who remplaces Charles. She introduces herself below:
"My name is Marikym D’Amours-Bryson and I’m pleased to be able to do an internship as the activities coordinator for GEOS Montreal. I’m about to finish my degree in Cultural animation and research (social communication) at University of Quebec in Montreal (UQAM). I’ll be glad to share my passion for the province of Quebec and the city of Montreal with you, as I’ve been living here ever since I’m born. I simply love meeting people from all over the world and learning about other cultures. Therefore, I’ve traveled to Europe, United States and Caribbeans and I’m looking forward to my next trip. Above and beyond my travel passion, I enjoy alpine skiing, surfing, hiking, kayaking, cooking and I’m always up to try some new experiences. Passionate and always smiling, I’ll be more than happy to show you around Montreal, whether it is attractions, restaurants, bars, pubs, and nice places must-be-seen and glad to tell you a bit more about Quebec’s culture."

"Hello ! My name is Michelle. I started my work at Mc Donald 3 weeks ago and I am enjoying my work. As I am a cashier, I can practice my French and my English (in Montreal, you can practice both languages which is very appreciable). People, who I work with, are very nice and help me if I need it. We do our best to provide an excellent service to our customers and we have to give a productive and serious work. When I came to Montreal, I participated in the work experience program and I had to attend three workshops in which I received many important information concerning work methods. For example, methods like how to make a good CV, and how to act and behave during an interview in Canada. One more time, I would like to thank GEOS team for helping me with this opportunity. I am very satisfied with this experience and with my time in Montreal. I am sure that this experience will give me a memorable formation for my life. The 39th Festival du Nouveau Cinema offers more than 290 independent films from 51 different countries over 12 days. Not only does it offer high-quality works, it’s Canada’s oldest international film festival.
Students at GEOS Montreal aren’t in this beautiful city only to learn English or French, but also to discover Quebec’s culture and Montreal’s rhythm. Therefore, in September, our students had the chance to experience different activities.
The First Friday of the month, some brave students enjoyed playing soccer (football as it is called outside United States and Canada) in the giant Jeanne Mance Park, at the foot of Mount Royal, on a beautiful 40⁰C day. Second Friday of the month, many students, curious and exited, tasted Quebec’s most popular fast food meal, “Poutine”, at the famous restaurant Frites Alors!

The verdict is in: Poutine is awesome! As some tasted the classic fries, gravy sauce and cheese poutine, others tried steak poutine or Mexican poutine. One thing is for sure, we all had a great time! The next Friday, another group of fearless students faced off in a friendly paintball battle! Dressed with plumber suits, they went running around an indoor sandy field decorated with jeeps, school buses, metal bins and wooden tours where they could hide themselves. Everyone finished this activity alive and smiling!

The last Friday of the month, September 24th, we all went to St-Viateur’s Bagels and then to Fairmount’s Bagels to have a bite in those very famous and unique bagels. Which ones were the best? The students chose, but now you get to discover those delicacies…
Throughout the month, every Tuesday and Wednesday, the students could continue their progress in English and in French discussing with other students about their culture, their country as well as learning about Quebec’s culture and history.

What is happening in October in Montreal?
The month of October is kicking off with one of Montreal best music festival Pop Montreal. This festival has been offering Montrealers and tourists great lineups of artists since 2002. Even if some of the names are unknown right now, some will become famous in the coming years. From September 29th to October 3rd, more than 400 acts are scheduled to play in more than 50 venues across the city, mostly located in the Mile End area. Along with music, Pop Montreal has film, art events as well as a conference and a cultural fair called Puces Pop.
Finally, October in North-America means one word: Halloween! Each year, the city of Montreal organizes La Grande Mascarade to celebrate this fun event! Be sure to walk through the streets of Old Montreal around October 29th to 31st.
