Tuesday, March 31st, 2009 - Newsletter “Montreal - The GEOS Insider”

Under the category of 'better-late-than-never', welcome to our March newsletter in April. We've had a wonderfully busy winter with more classes and especially French students than ever before. We continue to be impressed with the enthusiasm of our students to register and extend their classes, and our teaching staff, administrative staff, and group of internship students, has grown to meet the challenge.

On the topic of spring flowers, we have two great new staff members Andrea Lee as Academic Coordinator and Audrey Malgras-Serra as Marketing and Student Services Coordinator. Andrea Lee is from Montreal , she supervises the teaching staff and takes care of academic issues. Audrey comes from France and she does the organizing of weekly activities for students as well as some marketing tasks in GEOS. They are both super friendly and always available to help students to enrich their experience at GEOS.

Concerning the teaching staff, a warm welcome to Boian , our new French teacher.

And, on the topic of interns, our paid and unpaid internship programs continue to grow in popularity. The unpaid internship is perfect for students interested in a professional work placement to advance their careers. The paid internship is perfect for those students looking to supplement the cost of their studies and practice their English or French in a service-industry environment. Please contact the school for more information.

School Activities
The winter is completely gone and we have many  great springtime activities in GEOS.Students enjoyed both indoor-activities like ice skating, curling, bowling, billiards, paintballs, and outdoor activities such as sliding, sledding, snowshoeing, and tobogganing.

School Activities
This season finished with a trip to the sugar shack where eating was a pure delight. Now, the season is changing and the spring is around the corner. It is time to enjoy the sun, to admire the flowers and butterflies, to sit outside and have some beer and conversations  with friends. Many activities will be organized such as hiking and walking on Mont Royal. We are also invited to join the famous Tulip festival in Ottawa in May. The excellent Jazz festival and the great world film festival in August should not be missed. On Sundays, the Tam-Tam on Mont Royal host a variety of activities such as soccer game and drummers that will surely make you dance.

School Activities
At GEOS, we love “to travel the world and the seven seas” like our students. Our motto Culture-Language-Adventure encourages us to move from place to place. Excursions to some cities such as Ottawa, Toronto, Quebec and Vancouver will enrich your stay in Canada. To taste a poutine and a smoked meat sandwich  is something that should not be missed in Montreal, as well as listening to the Tam-Tam drummers during summer.

School Activities
And then back in GEOS, you can always profit from the teaching and the knowledge of your teacher. You can watch a movie with popcorn or sit around for  coffee and a conversation with your teachers and friends, just like a big family. Due to a large demand of French learners, we offer a special French Coffee hour every Wednesday to practice their new French language skills!

Teacher of the Month - Zakia

Our teacher of the month for this issue is Zakia Ben Djoudi O. She introduces herself: " Je suis Algérienne d'origine berbère (les berbères sont les autochtones de l'Afrique du Nord).

We are very proud of our Nationality mix for this month. Currently we have 28 Nationalities represented in the school among our 158 students

You can take a look where our students are coming from:
Europe: 19%
Canada:17%
Mexico: 11%
Korea and Colombia: 9% each
Japan: 8%
Brazil: 6%
Russia and U.S.A: 3% each
Others: 15%

My name is Audrey Malgras-Serra and I have been working at GEOS for one month as Marketing and Student Services Coordinator.

I studied European Tourism Management and have taken many language courses in different countries. Having experienced working in many different cultures makes me want to continue working in the same environment. To work at GEOS represents the dreaming job for me as this is a place where you can find a mix of cultures and languages in a familiar and nice atmosphere.

I was also a former student at GEOS as I studied English for one month almost two years ago. I had such a great time that I wanted to relive my memories by coming back but this time as an employee. I am working on the weekly activities, as well as on dealing with marketing tasks (website, newsletters, promotion etc.) And I am very pleased to help the student with any issues which could occur during their stay. I want them to have the same great time that I had when I was studying at GEOS.

Student Testimonial - Gabriella Varga

Gabriella comes from Hungary and have been stuyding at GEOS for 15 weeks.

"When I came to Montreal I had English knowledge, but I couldn't use it very well. I was afraid of the new life situations and it was frustrating. I have been studying at GEOS for two months and I feel much better thanks to GEOS staff. My teachers are patient and always teach with joy.

Every day, when I go to school I learn something new about Canada, the language or my classmates. This is a good way to practice because we talk with each other before, after and during the class. If I have any questions, I can go to my teacher, who helps and replies with enthusiasm, I'm sure I will learn more in the next two months.

If you would like to study English or French, I can recommend GEOS, because you can find a nice atmosphere with kind people."

A Day in the Life
