Monday, september 30th, 2009 - Newsletter “Montreal - The GEOS Insider”

Welcome to our September newsletter. September’s weather was much better than other months: a nice and warm month with the leaves announcing a beautiful autumn with all its bright and vibrant new colors. It’s a good time to plan some hiking trips to different regions of Quebec. This is a great time for our students because it’s not too hot, not too cold, and they can still enjoy spending time outside, sitting on a terrace, going for a bike ride or for a walk.
This month, we had events to please people of all tastes. There was the Montreal marathon for our most athletic students and for our school’s romantics, there was "The magic of Lanterns" celebrating the traditional Chinese astronomy at the Montreal Botanical Garden. Our comic book fans definitely enjoyed the 2 day-event called “Montreal Comic-Con”. The students interested in cultural diversity enjoyed the “Journée de la culture”, a three day event with free activities. Plus, pop music fans had a chance to enjoy the Pop Montreal festival. The best event, however, was the book launch party of Ian Orti, our beloved teacher. GEOS Montreal Staff members and some students went to the event and listened to the author read from the book. It was a really inspiring evening. If you are interested, the book’s title is "The Olive and the dawn".
Please keep in touch and join our Facebook group! Feel free to upload pictures and share your experience with your friends. You can also take a look at our videos (please visit www.youtube.com ) and have a look at the testimonials on our website (www.geosmontreal.com).

School Activities

Our students have fun in Montreal and hang out quite often at clubs, bars and house parties. We organized few activities for this month: Old Port tour, Bagel tour, exhibition at the museum of Fine art and ice skating tour. On Mondays, our students also enjoyed movies like “Bon cop, bad cop”, “The decline of the American Empire” and “Les invasions barbares”.

What is happening in October in Montreal?

An important festival that must not be missed is the Festival du nouveau Cinema, starting on October 7th. "The Festival du Nouveau Cinéma is committed to highlighting and contributing to the development of new trends in cinema and new media. It is a showcase for new, original works, particularly in the fields of independent cinema and digital creation".

Teacher of the Month

Our french teacher Proshat introduces herself: "Je m'appelle Proshat Hemmati et j'ai 34 ans.

“The time that I’ve been here was one of the best, funniest, exciting and friendliest time that I have ever had. Montreal is a beautiful place , with many different and interesting things to do. I always had fun, each day that I stayed here is one different amazing experience. The people that I met in GEOS are so good and friendly… I made many friends, I’ve gained a lot of knowledge about all different cultures. The people that work in GEOS have been there when I needed something, with advice, help, all that I could need.
I am so happy to be here!”

"Being in Canada has been one of the most wonderful life experiences for Mexican students. Families, school and life in this exciting city are the main reasons as to why they had so  much fun in this country.
The host family is very important in the students’ first contact with this beautiful land. They have learned that houses, meal schedules, and family expectations have enriched their life and experiences. Now they have lots of stories to tell their own families back home in Mexico.
GEOS has played an important role in giving students extra tools for communicating with their teachers, classmates, friends and Canadian families.
I always tell Mexicans that if they want to take friends they must take a language course and attend each and every one of the classes. So, please, come everyday and practice your second or third language as much as you can!
Telling students what Montreal is like at night has been the main ingredient in encouraging them to come here every summer.
In fact, it is the time students enjoy the most because they look forward to meeting someone new, dancing a lot and having a few drinks, all of which help and motivate them to continue on with their language studies here or back home in Mexico.
Students always say “Next year I’ll return to Canada with a much better English or French level”.
Please be part of this exciting experience. Give yourself the opportunity of meeting a really good friend from Mexico, try to learn and have fun together at school (or)after classes."
